Numbers 25:9 And there were slain four and twenty thousand men.

Slain. Hebrew adds, "in the plague," or pestilence sent by God, (Psalm 105:29,) and in the punishments inflicted by the judges, "twenty and four thousand." (Haydock) --- The tribe of Simeon, lying to the south, had given way to greater disorders with the Madianites; (Calmet) so that they were found to have 37,100 fewer than when they were numbered before, chap. 2:13. See chap. 26:14. (Haydock)
